Creating people's geographies
“Everything is changing”, Will Rogers once opined. “People are taking their comedians seriously and the politicians as a joke.” These five US House Representatives are an exception, honourably voting NO in the US Congress on H Resolution 34, an extremely blinkered and deceptive resolution in effect endorsing Israel’s genocidal attack on Gaza by a shameful margin of 390-5, with 22 present and 16 not voting.
Passed on Friday, January 9, the resolution frames Israel’s immoral attack on Gaza as “self-defense” and fails to hold Israel either responsible or accountable for its role in causing Palestinian civilian casualties and injuries in Gaza, nor Israel’s extensive damage to Palestinian civilian infrastructure. While substantially skewed toward the Israeli line, the resolution also contains language that claims support of “a just and sustainable resolution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict”, giving it a veneer of “balance” in order to obtain votes.
Representatives Kucinich, Moore, Paul, Rahall and Waters: thank you. US readers are asked to consider supporting them by writing and/or donating to the campaigns of these exceptional Americans.
The views of Congressional Democrats contrasts with the views of rank-and-file Democrats and Democratic voters: according to a Rasmussen poll 55% of Democrats favoured Israel seeking a diplomatic solution first, and half of all adults surveyed feared Israel’s actions will cause more terrorism against the United States.
