Peoples Geography — Reclaiming space

Creating people's geographies

History of the Web: Video

This history of the web (all in 4 mins 33) video is interesting and quite well done. It was put together by an anthropology academic whose feelings on the impact of the transformations wrought by technology (we are the machine, web 2.0) also sneak in.

Currently I’m writing up a chapter on the use of virtual space in justice movements, so that may go towards explaining 3 consecutive posts on web-related topics. I also have a post-in-progress on Gaza, with so much happening on a day to day basis there. Its certainly a challenge staying focused on one intensive writing project while you’re a political junkie on so many other topics. Enjoy the video.

Great stuff! Thanks very much, Tartan. I’ll pass on links along the same lines at some point if interested, if you haven’t already come across them. Good to hear you’re doing research in this area.

Timely Reminders

"Those who crusade, not for God in themselves, but against the devil in others, never succeed in making the world better, but leave it either as it was, or sometimes perceptibly worse than what it was, before the crusade began. By thinking primarily of evil we tend, however excellent our intentions, to create occasions for evil to manifest itself."
-- Aldous Huxley

"The only war that matters is the war against the imagination. All others are subsumed by it."
-- Diane DiPrima, "Rant", from Pieces of a Song.

"It is difficult
to get the news from poems
yet men die miserably every day
for lack
of what is found there"
-- William Carlos Williams, "Asphodel, That Greeny Flower"
